Arroyo Elementary – Jogathon

I spent Friday morning last week taking pictures of the First Grade Class at Arroyo Elementary School running / walking in their annual Jogathon Fundraiser.  While I’m not a sports photographer, I think the lens did a great job of making up for the lack of experience in photographing moving objects.

Alaskan Adventure

One of the most amazing things I have ever seen in my life is a whale jumping out of the water.  I wish I had a bigger zoom lens but I was still able to capture the humpback whale jumping out of the water.

This was taken with a Canon 40D and a Canon 70-200 mm 2.8L IS lens.

Blue bottles – this caught my eye as we were passing by a local cafe.  This shot was taken with the Canon 40D and the Canon 16-35mm f2.8L II lens.

Action Shots – Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS

More action shots – I have to learn to start taking pictures instead of watching the game.  All of these shots where taken with the Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS lens.

Canon 16-35 f2.8L II – mini review

I have had this lens now for a few weeks.  The first week I did not get a chance to really use it as I was still playing around with the Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS lens I picked up.  I have to say the wide angle on this even on a cropped body is amazing.  It’s like going back to the old film days when I had a 24mm lens on my Canon EOS-3 camera.  You really don’t notice it until you start using it how great it is to have the width sometimes.  Now it just makes me want to get a full frame camera even more.

Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens

I do see the vignetting problems many people have complained about.  I see how it could be worse in a full frame camera body.  I do wish this had IS.  I know that seems ridiculous for such a short focal length but it would come in handy when taking pictures of kids especially.

What I have noticed that I don’t really like is the hood doesn’t really work very well.  It’s just too shallow.  I read complaints about it and now I see why they complained about it.  Two sides are just barely a hood on this lens.  It would be nice if it were just a little bit deeper to block out the extra sun flares that can occur.  I don’t always use a hood but I do see their value in certain situations and on a lens that is this wide it’s a shame they didn’t go just a little bit deeper on the petals.  That being said, I think this lens will be on my camera body a lot if not all the time now.  At least until I tire of the wide angle and get a hold of a Canon 24-105 f4L or a Canon 24-70 f2.8L lens to make my set complete.
